QUT wins Pan-Pacific!

The QUT Pan-Pacific Team has won the moot! Justen and Sam mooted the final for QUT and were victorious last weekend. Congratulations to them, and their team mates Steph Miller and Leith Helsdon. No doubt they enjoyed a well-deserved break and the pleasures of Vanuatu!

USyd wins Gibbs

Congratulations to USyd who defeated Adelaide in the final of the Gibbs moot. Congratulations also to Edith Cowan for winning the prize for the best written submissions and to Andy from UTS who was best speaker in the rounds.

Gibbs Day 2

QUT had a very successful day two at the Gibbs Constitutional Moot, winning their moots against Edith Cowan University and the Australian National University.  Congratulations to the QUT team Gareth McCasker, Luke Gamble, Kit Cameron and Jess Pham on a good day of results and a strong overall performance.

Congratulations also to the teams that made the semi-finals: University of Sydney, University of Adelaide, University of New South Wales and Bond University.  Good luck for the rest of the competition.

Gibbs: Day 1

QUT had a somewhat disappointing but encouraging first day of Gibbs. Luke and Jess lost narrowly in the morning to UNSW in front of an almost-silent bench, and Gareth and Kit lost in a split bench decision against Flinders University in front of a much more interventionist bench. They all performed admirably in their first competition moots and give us great hope for our two moots against Edith Cowan and ANU tomorrow. Unfortunately there is little chance of the team making the finals, as there are 12 teams competing for 4 semi final spots, but everyone is looking forward to tomorrow!

Gibbs Constitutional Moot

The QUT team for the Gibbs Constitutional Moot flies to Melbourne today to discuss citizenship, terrorism and the Divarians (fictional (?) religion who beleives in the divine figure Diva). The QUT team is comprised of Gareth McCasker, Luke Gamble, Kit Cameron and Jess Pham. They are coached by John Pyke and I.

Pan Pacific Moot

QUT's team of Sam Bain, Justen Bersin, Leith Helsdon and Stephanie Wilkinson has reached the final of the Pan Pacific Moot Competition in in Port Vila, Vanuatu.  In the final QUT will compete against the University of the South Pacific.  Congratulations to the team and good luck for the final.

National Virtual Moot - QUT narrowly misses out on the final

The rounds of the National Virtual Moot took place last week, with video and audio hook-ups allowing mooting cross-country (against teams in Perth and Melbourne) and cross-continental (against teams in America). Given the technology in use, the question concerning copyright in an avatar from Second Life was very appropriate.

QUT's Applicant team of Stephanie Dale and Lauren Farrelly lost narrowly to the US team from University of William and Mary, in a moot plagued by technical difficulties, on Wednesday morning.

QUT's Respondent team of Holly Whitcroft and Dominique Moritz won their moot against Murdoch University on Wednesday afternoon.

From all reports, all 4 mooters mooted extremely well and should be very proud of their efforts. Three teams were tied on 1 win 1 loss, but Bond University had the best differential so they progressed to the final against William and Mary to be held this morning.

Congratulations to Stephanie, Lauren, Holly and Dominique and to their coach, Jen Yule for a successful moot.

QUT at Family Moot

Our Family Law Moot teams competed last week to mixed success:

Kathryn Badger, Lucy Stockwell and Max Walker beat Griffith last Tuesday night.
Tim Wilkins, Steph Wilkinson and Alex Vernados lost narrowly to UQ last Wednesday night.

Unfortunately neither team made the finals of the competition, but they should all be congratulated on their fine efforts - from what I have heard they were all very impressive. Congratulations also to their coaches, Iyla Davies and Donna Cooper.

AAT moot - QUT out to Bond

QUT is out of the AAT moot after a narrow loss to Bond last Thursday night in front of Senior Member Carstairs. The judge awarded the case to QUT on the law, but to Bond on their presentation, so much credit to the QUT team of Troy Blakeney, Wing Poon and Melinda Kastanya and their coach Mark Thomas for their preparation and research. Better luck next time!

UNSW wins Shine Moot

UNSW narrowly beat USyd in the final of the Shine Moot on Friday night in front of a very esteemed bench of President McMurdo of the Queensland Court of Appeal, Richard Jones of the Land Court and Deputy President Paul Smith of the Land and Resources Tribunal. Congratulations to UNSW, USyd and to David Ananian-Cooper from ANU for winning best mooter in the rounds.

A congratulations also to the QUT team (Callan Lloyd, Goran Gelic, Nina Birch and Helen Keech) for their committment, good humour, selflessness and enthusiasm during the competition and the huge improvement which we saw in their mooting. I am sure they will all go on to excel as mooters for QUT.
